Updates - 2024 |
November The Between The Lines book club met again on October 7th to review The Poisonwood Bible, a novel is about the experiences of a missionary family who move from Georgia, USA to the Belgian Congo in 1959. This book received different reviews from various members. Some liked it very much and found the history of the Congo in the 1950's and 1960's very thought-provoking and enlightening. While others found that the writer's 'voices' for some of the main characters distracting, and even off-putting. The general consensus was that the book was much longer than it needed to be, and therefore most of us would not recommend it. This month we are reading Crow Lake by Mary Lawson, a Canadian writer. |
October In October we are reading The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. This novel is about the experiences of a missionary family who move from Georgia, USA to the Belgian Congo in 1959. It is written from five points of view, that of the mother and her four daughters. Between The Lines will meet on October 7th to discuss The Poisonwood Bible. |
September The Between The Lines book club met officially for the first time on September 9th to discuss the novel Washington Black, written by Canadian author Esi Edugyan. The novel is historical fiction/adventure fiction, which begins on a Barbados sugar plantation and follows the life of one slave through his escape from the plantation and throughout the adventures of his life as he travels through America, Canada, The Arctic, England and Morocco. Our first meeting was well attended and there was much discussion of our first novel. This book was generally not very well received. Some members were taken aback by the depictions of slavery and life on the plantation. And members also agreed, for the most part, that there was a point at which the book became too much of a fantasy and seemed to lose its meaning or direction. |
June At our June 3rd meeting we chose the books we will be reading for the 2024-2025 book club season. We will start by reading Washington Black, which will be discussed at our September 9th meeting since we will not meet in July or August. We currently have 9 members, so we still have room for one more. |
May Our first get together was on May 6 to decide on how we would operate, so there is no book on the agenda for May. We will meet again on June 3 to choose our books for the coming 'season', September 2024 through June 2025. Lorna Farmer has graciously offered to host this initial planning meeting. We will not be meeting during July and August due to vacations. We currently have eight members, so we do have room for 2 more and plenty of time before we actually get down to reading. |
