Aga Khan Museum

Have you seen the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto? The museum is located at 77 Wynford Drive in Toronto (Eglinton Ave E and Don Valley Parkway area). We need to determine if there is an interest in this event since we will need to put down a 50% deposit to secure a booking. There will be a spot at the back of the room at the September 8th general meeting to indicate your interest.

Date: Thursday November 17th or Saturday November 19th (keep in mind that there will probably be less traffic on a Saturday).

Cost: $24 which includes admission fee and a private tour.

This would be a self drive or carpool event. We would then return to the Durham Region for dinner at a local restaurant (to be determined) (optional). Check out their website to learn more about this interesting museum https://www.agakhanmuseum.org/index.html

Convenors: Pat Bolger pbolger@rogers.com and Sharon Fenn slf809@hotmail.com

Turn left into the parking lot and park in the west end of the lot. We will gather in groups of no more than 15 (park rules without a permit) on the south side across from the parking lot under the trees. Social members will assist with directing you to the right area.

Bring your own chair, snack and beverage.

Lawn Games: Let's have some fun. If you have any lawn games such as lawn darts, croquet, bocce ball etc. please bring them along so we can have some safe outdoor fun with our PROBUS friends. Hand sanitizing wipes will be available.

Weather: Let’s hope for good weather. You don’t need to notify us that you are coming so you can decide if the weather suits you. If the weather is looking bad an email will be sent out from Durhamwestprobus@gmail.com

Looking forward to seeing everyone for socializing and games.

Putting Edge Outing - February 22nd, 2022

Our first PROBUS social function of the year was a trip to Putting Edge in Whitby. There were 30 members who were eager to get out and socialize again. We had a great time challenging ourselves on the colourful mini putt course. A few cheers were heard as people scored those rare Hole in Ones!! (Overshadowed by the moans of those who just missed the hole)

The Westben performance of ABBA Mia did not disappoint our members on Thursday July 21st in Campbellford. We listened to ABBA songs such as "Take a chance on me", "Thank you for the music" and "Mama Mia". Many were singing, humming along, tapping our feet or even up dancing. After this great show many drove to The Mill Restaurant at Cobourg Creek Golf Course for a very enjoyable dinner with lots of chatter. Thanks to Maria Bawcutt and Sharon Fenn for organizing this event.

September General Meeting is the last chance to sign up!

We are excited to announce that we are planning an outing to visit the Lucy Maud Montgomery Manse and Church in Leaksdale. Approximately 10 kilometres north of Uxbridge. Allow approximately 1 hour to get there.

The Leaskdale Manse, in Uxbridge, Ontario, is a National Historic Site of Canada which offers visitors remarkable access to the life of famed Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery during the 15 years she called Leaskdale, Ontario home. Whether you’ve read her work or not, you’ve got to respect the sheer volume of content that she was able to produce, and the remarkable impact that it’s had on people all over the world. In her lifetime, she published over 20 novels, over 525 short stories, over 500 poems, as well as 30 or so essays. That sounds like the stats of a small publishing house, let alone one person!

Biogas Tour

Date:Thurs Sept 1st

Time: 10:30 am

Location: On Zoo Road - on the east side of Meadowvale, across from the Toronto Zoo

Cost $5.00 per person - free parking

Tour limited to 17 people.   Sign up for this interesting tour will be at the July and August general meetings.

Why is this tour unique?

ZooShare's biogas plant is Canada's 1st zoo-based biogas plant--there's none like it! Come with us as we explore how both zoo and food waste can be converted into usable energy to power our homes and buildings!

What can you expect to learn from this tour?

In this tour, we will first cover the history of ZooShare. We will discuss how ZooShare came into existence and how the project was born! After a brief history lesson, we will begin to dive into the magic of the biogas plant. There are 5 main areas of the biogas plant---the receiving zones, the heat exchange/pump room, anaerobic digester, the digestate end storage tank, and the CHP engines. We will walk you through each area and provide the basics as to how the zoo/food waste travels through each system! By the end of the tour, you should have a basic understanding as to how the zoo/food waste travels through each mechanism and is converted into energy!

What do you need for the tour?

As it will be outdoors, you need to dress for the weather...rain or shine. Bring a hat/sunscreen/water

You will be able to climb the stairs of the digester for an overview of the Rouge and the plant. However, the majority of the tour will be on the ground level. If it is very hot, you might want an umbrella for shade, or to bring a lawn chair to sit on during the talk.

Members who are interested are invited to join us for a patio lunch at a location near the plant. Restaurant to be announced at a later date. But we need to know numbers so please indicate your interest when you sign up for the tour.
