President's Message
Welcome to our September Newsletter.
Summer is officially coming to a close as the C.N.E. winds down. Hopefully, you squeezed as much out of it as you could with so many options like
|
|
|
participating in our Activity Groups and Social Events, golfing, swimming, going to the cottage or seeing loved ones. The grandkids go back to school soon and for some of us who are helping out, our routine changes as well.
This weekend as you know is the Labour Day weekend. According to Wikipedia, “Labour Day is an annual day of celebration of the achievements of workers. It has its origins in the labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.” Of course, we much prefer the zero hours a day for work, sixteen hours a day for recreation and eight hours for rest.
On the Social Events scene several members enjoyed the Nine and Dine Event last month so be sure to read more about that in this newsletter. Next, we will be having our annual Blue Jays event. Unfortunately, it’s not the season we had hoped for, but it gives us a chance to see some of our future stars.
Later this month, our club will be represented at the Ajax 55+Wellness & Information Fair on September 14th where we will have a table top display. Thank you to Dave and Bev Bicknell for representing our club there. If you happen to attend, be sure to say hi to Bev and Dave. Go to Members Corner for more information.
This is also the month when some of our Activity Groups reconvene and pick up where they left off after a brief summer break.
Our friends at Ajax Probus have invited us to their Halloween Party. From time to time you may see some invitations from their club in our newsletter. More details follow elsewhere in this newsletter.
Stay safe and stay busy. Happy Labour Day!

Special Notice
Remember the days when we had a white pages phone book with the name, address and phone number of everyone in the area? Every household used to have one and every phone booth. Remember those too? That’s been replaced with the online version with the website Canada411. That works well when we know the address of the person we are trying to reach.
We’ve had members contact us trying to reach other members but don’t have much more than a first and last name. Our Membership Directory doesn’t help either because many members have not modified their Privacy Settings to allow this. We understand that some members are uncomfortable doing this themselves or just haven’t gotten around to it.
To make it easier and to make our Membership Directory more functional, beginning in November when members begin to renew, we will do this for you. Your email address will be visible to other members. Understanding that some members have unlisted numbers, we will only publish their email.
Information in the Directory can ONLY be seen by logged-in members. It is NOT available to the general public. Of course you can keep your email private by either changing it back after renewal or contacting us at dwprobus.membership@gmail.com
We will include a reminder of this update in the October newsletter.

Coffee and tea are available at our General Meetings, during the break. To satisfy everyone’s taste three types of coffee will be available, regular, dark roast and instant decaffeinated (available at the "tea" counter).

Volunteers to Act as Greeters
Are you a people person? If you would like to get more involved with the Club but with a limited commitment of only 45 minutes once a month, then we have a role for you!
We are still looking for Greeters for our General Meetings to
help our Management Team ensure that our members and guests feel welcome by being addressed personally using their names as printed on their Membership Badge or Guest Lanyard. If you are interested in helping us fill this role, there will be a signup sheet at the Membership Desk at the next General Meeting, or you can contact us at dwprobus.membership@gmail.com
This is an opportunity to meet some of your fellow club members on a personal level.
Bev & Dave Bicknell
Membership Co-Chair

Tom Herstad is the author of 2nd Line West which tells the story of his mother’s endurance. Born and bred in Toronto, Tom has been an avid hockey player, coach, and passionate outdoor adventurer, cooking over campfires and enjoying the Thirty Thousand Islands of Georgian Bay.
Tom will share why his mother’s story is worth sharing, why it is a story worth reading, and why it is a story worth making into a movie. In sharing his mother’s story he hopes to raise the conscious awareness of a kinder, more compassionate and more empathic world for all.

A new member received her badge at the General Meeting on August 8. Shireen Whitmore is seen (in the middle) with Membership Co-Chair Bev Bicknell and President Walter Matias.
|
|
|
Once you receive your badge please remember to wear it at ALL PROBUS meetings and events.
Your badge is important. It identifies you as a member and makes it easier for your fellow members to greet you and get to know you. You may know your name but others don’t! It also serves as a level of security.
If you do not have your name badge at our monthly meeting, you will be asked to sign in using the "No Badge" sign-in sheet at the Membership desk.
After two instances of not having your badge, you will be asked to purchase a replacement. The cost of a replacement badge is $25.00.
Replacement badges can be obtained by asking at the membership desk or contacting us at dwprobus.membership@gmail.com.

SOCIAL
Please note that there are NO REFUNDS if you sign up for an event and are unable to attend. You may have someone go in your place by getting payment from them and notifying the Convenor of the event of the change, along with the name and phone number of the person replacing you.
If registration for an event is currently at capacity, please feel free to join the waitlist. If someone has already registered but subsequently finds that they can't attend, you can purchase their ticket. In this case, the event convenor will contact the first person on the waitlist. This is done on a personal basis. Wild Apricot is not involved.
Some of our members are unable to drive but would like to participate in social events. If you are planning on driving to an event and are willing to share your ride with someone unable to drive, please contact the event convenor and let them know. Likewise, if you need a ride, contact the event convenor so they can match you up with a driver. PLEASE NOTE: Many of our members suffer from allergies. In consideration of those who suffer from an allergy to scents, we ask
that you please refrain from wearing perfume or aftershave when attending
PROBUS gatherings or events.

Sharing Our Recipe Depression Cake
|
|
|
This is a cake of many names: Depression Cake, Blue Monday Cake, Wartime
Cake, WW2 Ration Cake, Wacky Cake or Crazy Cake. Whatever I call it “The Big Guy” gets
into character and struts his Blue Man face paint, his camouflage and army
fatigues, practices his sad face or just plain goes full on madcap offbeat wacky!
It’s just a roll of the dice. Drama all the time!
